Charlene Hill Hood

Charlene Hill Hood, 92, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026 in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Barry Loving, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Canadian, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Charlene was born on October 11, 1933, in Durant, Oklahoma, to L.L and Jackie Cooper. During the Dust Bowl the family moved to California so Charlene’s father could find work. He worked in the shipyards in Oakland until the war was over, and then they made their way back to the panhandle of Texas, making their home in Borger.

Charlene graduated from Borger High School on a Friday and then moved to Pampa to work for Southwestern Bell on the following Monday. She continued to work for them for 32 years, and then she worked another 8 years after it was purchased by AT&T.

Charlene loved the mountains of Colorado and gospel music, especially the Bill Gaither Vocal Band. Faith was an important part of her life, and she was a longtime member of the Baptist Church and then she joined First Christian Church of Pampa in 1982. As she became older, she enjoyed watching First Baptist Church of Amarillo on television.

Charlene was also a loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Mavericks. She also enjoyed watching American Idol and Dancing with the Stars, and she also enjoyed round dancing.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Paul Hill who passed away in 1980. She later married Jack Hood who passed away in 2012. Charlene was a faithful and loving caregiver to her mother and Jack for over twenty years.

Charlene is survived by her only son, Carl Hill and his wife Paula of Amarillo; and granddaughter, Jessica Hill of Tennessee, whom she loved with all her heart.
