DeLois Cook

September 20, 1935 — September 2, 2022

DeLois Cook, 86, of Plainview, and formerly of Pampa, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022, in Plainview.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

DeLois was born on September 20, 1935, in Bronson, Texas to Willie Opal and Lois Estelle Phelps. She grew up in Jasper, Texas, where she attended school and graduated in 1954. After high school, DeLois moved to Houston and worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. In Houston, she met Alton Moore, and the two married on March 19, 1955. The couple moved to Jasper and lived there for a few years, but they eventually moved to Fort Worth, so that Alton could go to seminary school. For years, DeLois lived as a preacher’s wife, moving to different states, including Oregon and Washington. It was during this time that DeLois and Alton became the parents of four wonderful children. They were the pride and joy of DeLois’ life.

Unfortunately, Alton passed away in 1973, so DeLois and the kids moved to Amarillo. While there, she met Jack Dodd. They married on April 4, 1975 and lived in Pampa. They shared 7 years together, before Jack preceded her in death.

While living in Pampa, DeLois worked for Highland General Hospital. It was there she was introduced to Guy Cook. The two fell in love and were married on April 27, 1984. Soon after getting married, they moved to Plainview. DeLois worked for hospitals in Plainview and Hale Center as a clerk and secretary until her retirement at the age of 81. Guy preceded her in death in 2017.

DeLois lived a full and wonderful life. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a ferocious Scrabble player and liked to sew, read, cook, and bake. She was a wonderful lady who will be missed by many.

DeLois is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joseph Moore; and two brothers, Weldon Phelps and Steve Phelps.

She is survived by her three children, Rhonda Patterson of Stonewall, Oklahoma, Karen Furnish and husband Jay of Pampa, and Benton Moore of Plainview; three grandchildren, Alisha Bailey and husband Matt of Pampa, Meagan Jackson of North Richland Hills, and Brandi Elmore and husband Scott of Stonewall, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Rilah, Tate, Olin, Baxter, Logan, and Ethan; brother, Jerry Allen Phelps of Meridian; and numerous other family members.
