On September 29, 1942 Donna Gail was born to Doyle and Nora Jones in Memphis, Texas. She was truly a miracle baby, being born with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck and completely black from not breathing. The doctor actually gave up on her and put her in the trash can. But God was not done with Donna. He sent her Aunt Eddie and the nurse to retrieve and resuscitated her. After her close call in the beginning, Donna grew into a 5 foot, 100 lb spit fire. She married Tommy Lamar in 1956 and in their 6 years together they had two children, Debra and Mark. Donna was always just stunningly beautiful and so petit. There’s some debate on whether she was expecting Mark already or had just had him when she took a modelling course sponsored by 17 Magazine. Either way she was no doubt the cutest little mama around. Years later Donna met the love of her life, Randy Slavick. She loved him so much she married him twice. The first was August 7, 1965. The second was in 1973, where her daughter Debbie and future son-in-law Raymond stood up with them. Even when they were technically divorced, Donna and Randy were still together until the day he died in 2012. Collectively they were married 47 years.
From the time Donna could talk she had a love of fashion. When she was about 4 or 5 years old, she would wait for her Popa to get off work, as soon as he came through the door she was asking to “go lookin Popa, go look?”. So Popa would take her downtown to go window shopping. This passion persisted throughout her life. In the late ‘60s Donna became the manager at Pants West. This gave her the opportunity to bring up to the minute styles to the citizens of Pampa. Levi’s are for all occasions, and she had them to fit anyone from the smallest baby to the largest adult. During this time Donna, Randy, and Debbie spent many cool summer nights in the coffee shop hopping on the back of a Honda Goldwing. A group of friends on anywhere from 4 to 12 motorcycles would start at the local coffee shop then take off for another in a neighboring town, stopping halfway for a smoke and story break. Randy even taught Donna how to ride and it wasn’t long until she was dropping Debbie at school on her own motorcycle. Not only was Donna a biker babe, but she was also a car enthusiast. One she loved in particular being a Corvette. She had always wanted one, but they were out of the budget. That is until Randy found one at a great price. It was a 1969 427 4 speed competition orange Stingray with less than 20,000 miles. He also found a toy replica, which he gave her on Christmas Eve. After opening it, Donna said that she “finally got her Corvette”. Randy then sent her to get something from the garage where the real one sat. Her excitement can only be described and classic tv game show winner. She screamed, cried, fell down, ran around, and even hit Randy. This is very much how I expect she reacted to seeing her Lord and Savior. Donna was somewhat of a hot rod. She once took Randy’s car out to the airport drag races and came home with the trophy. Randy was a little perturbed that hers was bigger than his, but I know he was proud. She spent many of days being Randy’s pit crew when he was racing his car, Plum Crazy. However, she flat out refused to be on the team when he bought a dragster named El Diablo. She wasn’t about to root for anything to do with the devil.
In 1973 Donna, Randy, and the kids moved to Ulysses, Kansas to take over Kansas Irrigation Engine from Nora, Donna’s mama. They spent the next 25 years running the business. At the end of the decade Donna was upgraded to Mimi with her first granddaughter arriving in 1978 and the second in ‘79. She had 7 grandchildren, 22 great grands, 6 great greats and one on the way. In true Mimi fashion she plunged headfirst into her “grandma hobby” of beauty pageants. She held numerous titles including 1985 Mrs. Universal Mini Queen, ‘87 Mrs. Southern Charm and National Mrs. Southern Charm, ‘88 Mrs. Kansas International, and ‘90 and ‘92 Mrs. Kansas United States. If you asked her what she had the most fun winning, she would’ve said the award of “Best Figure for a Grandmother”. During one of the pageants the husbands were brought on stage for interviews. When Randy was asked what Donna was like he said something to the effect of her having more finesse with a credit card than anyone he’d ever known. The panel asked him what he did to which he replied, “I have to sell a few irrigation engines to pay for Donna’s hobby.” They followed, wanting to know what that was to which he informed them it was shopping. Randy had a nickname for Donna; it was Donna Duck. She was not real happy when he told her it was because ducks had bills. Her taste in clothing, jewelry, furniture, cars, etc. was impeccable and expensive. Donna’s love for shopping was something she shared with her cousin Sandy. For a time when one or the other would purchase something their husbands may not approve of, the girls would store what they bought at the others house. Once an appropriate amount of time lapsed, they would retrieve the item, so when Randy or Freddy would ask they could honestly say they’d had it for ages.
One thing about Donna is no matter what she was doing she was dressed to the nines. At some point Randy and her had got bottle calves and Donna would be out feeding her babies Velvet and Theodora in her full-length black mink coat. As much as Donna enjoyed her diamonds and furs, when it came time to jump on the back of Randy’s Harley, she was decked out in her black leathers. This is exactly how she could be seen on the highway to Sturgis. For several years in the early ‘90s miss froufrou herself roughed it in a tent at the biggest bike rally in the United States. This is where she accomplished a very rare feat. Donna had her picture taken with a member of the Hell’s Angels. Sturgis was such a memorable and fun time for her. Randy went for the bikes, but Donna went to see what the latest craze was for leather jackets. She also got to show off her wild outfits like the turquoise leather loin cloth skirt with matching top and full Indian headdress. Donna’s last ride on Randy’s Harley was on her 81st birthday. Her grandson Cody picked her up and they went for a ride. Cody said that Mimi sat on that bike like she was born to it. The years melted away and further they rode the younger she got.
Donna and Randy moved back to Pampa in the early 2000s to be close to family. Donna has lived a full and exciting life. She had a rough start but made the most of every minute she was given. Even if the last few thousand minutes were spent worrying. If they gave a crown for worrying, she’d have had the biggest one. But all who knew her understood that her fretting was because she loved. And let me tell you she loved deeply. Her family’s welfare was ever present in her thoughts. She wanted nothing more than for them to be happy, healthy, and above all saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
