Geniva was born on July 31, 1952, in Pampa to Robert and Wilma Shugart. She attended school in Pampa for her first years of school before her family moved to Wheeler. While growing up and attending school in Wheeler, Geniva played basketball and volleyball. After high school, she married William “Bill” Farrell on July 5, 1969, and then moved to Sweetwater, OK. Within this marriage, Geniva and Bill would have two sons, Joe and Michael. They would part ways but remained friends.

Later, Geniva went to college to begin her training to be a nurse and graduated in 1984 with a LPN degree. Following her training, Geniva started her long career in the medical industry where she helped and served an inestimable amount of people through the years. During her tenure, she competed in several nursing competitions that included placing third in a state competition and 8th overall in a national competition. Additionally, Geniva was later promoted to a director of nursing position, and she helped many different hospitals in the Oklahoma area become compliant with industry standards.

Geniva found love again when she met Robert J. Hogan, Jr., and they married on January 7, 1991. She and Robert would live and spend time on their family farm until Robert returned to education. They shared almost 30 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 2020. Education was important to her and Robert, and Geniva returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture with an emphasis on horticulture.

Geniva was a talented and artistic person who enjoyed painting, making crafts, and writing poetry. She also appreciated the outdoors where she liked to fish, being by the water, and enjoying nature. Geniva will be remembered as a fun-loving person who could be a joy to be around and who loved her family, especially her grandchildren, very much. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert J. Hogan; brother, Robert Shugart, Jr.
