James W. "Jay" Gist

James W. “Jay” Gist, 78, of Pampa passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 in Pampa.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor assisted by Rev. Kevin Schaub, associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Durham, NC, officiating. Private family burial will follow at Memory Gardens under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Jay was born on September 7, 1941 in Henderson to Oren T. and Stella R. Herren Gist. He attended school in Pampa during his younger years and graduated from Pampa High School in 1960. He married Shirley Pepper on January 5, 1979 in Pampa. Jay owned and operated Jay’s Drive-In for over 30 years before “retiring” to open Chicken Express, which he ran for 20 years. He enjoyed going to Colorado, playing cards and dominos, and woodworking. Jay loved spending time with his grandchildren and reading them the Nativity Story every year. He will be remembered for having a loving heart and a strong faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Barbara Brogdon; sister, Edna Wood; and brother, Otis Gist.

Jay is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; 3 sons, Bobby Gist and wife Angie of Amarillo, James Schaub and wife Lyssa and Steve Schaub and wife Chanda, all of Pampa; daughter, Lisa Schaub of Ft. Worth; sister, Shirley Clark of Booker; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous friends.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to the First Baptist Church Missions, 203 N West St, Pampa, TX 79065 or Interim Hospice, 2217 Perryton Pkwy, Pampa, TX 79065.
