Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with John Curry, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

John was born on March 5, 1938, in Davenport, Oklahoma to Wayne and Kitsey Howell. After graduating high school in Oklahoma, John attended the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond while working as a firefighter until moving to Pampa in 1958. In September of 1960, he joined the U.S. Army, and, after basic training, he was stationed in Vietnam. He returned to Pampa in 1962 and finished his service in the Army Reserves.

John met Maxine Slater in 1963 at Caldwell's Drive-In, and they married December 7th of that same year. After years of working in the oilfields, John began working at Celanese in 1966 and remained there until his retirement in 1996. John was a devout Christian and would make sure he was up every morning at 5:30 AM to study with Shepherd's Chapel. He was an avid golfer and often played five days a week with his golf buddies at Hidden Hills. In addition to golf, he also loved playing pool and won many tournaments in his younger days. Most of all, John loved his family and savored every minute he spent with them.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Kitsey Howell; brother, Bernie Ratliff; and sister, Clara Bias.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine of the home; his daughter, Steffanie Webb and husband Kevin of Carrollton; three grandchildren, Christopher Webb of Dallas, Kathryn Webb and Nicholas Webb, both of Carrollton; sister-in-law, Nadine Moore of Pampa; brother-in-law, Wayne Slater and wife Barbara of Pampa; sister-in-law, Kay Smith of Chesapeake, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
