The last goodbye is the hardest and this cowboy just rode away. He was called Jack and was a long-time resident of Roberts County. Jack attended Wayside School, or the Little Red School House. He then attended Sam Houston in third grade in Pampa, his transportation to school was a Box International Bus. He attended Pampa High School, where he planted the lawn while in FFA in 1945. Jack’s first job was with Frank Carter and then later the Bowers Ranch by Allison.

Jack knew Betty Jean for four years before they married on May 23, 1947. They were in an old Dodge pickup when he asked for Betty Jean’s hand. Taylor and Son in Canyon built their first house which they lived in from 1951 until moving to Pampa in 2006. Jack was a member of the Everyman’s Bible Class.

Jack lived on the family farm for 80 years. He has been a cowboy since he was a young teenager. It’s all he ever wanted to do. The ways and means of ranching have changed but a good horse, a healthy cow, and the land remain. The reason for cowboying is pretty much the same. He has been a cowboy all over this area with a little farming on the side. During World War II was the only period he worked for wages. After he married Betty Jean, he ran cattle, raised wheat, and broke and trained horses, often all at the same time.

Jack’s steadfast, unmovable personality gave him determination to withstand all obstacles thrown at him. His determination to fight through all of life’s trials gave Jack a refusal to give into the greatest of illnesses thrown at him.

Jack is survived by his sister, Margie Walters of Kyle; nephews and niece, Bob Walters and wife Kathy of Midland, Jim Bill Walters and wife Mary of Big Spring, Matt Walters and wife Kris of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mary Carol and husband Robert of Victoria; his niece and nephews by marriage only as Jack would say, Martha Porter and husband Steve of Pampa, Nancy Burnett of Lubbock, and Rusty Ratliff and wife LaDonna of Amarillo.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Stella Herndon Sloan; his son, John Paris Sloan in 2006 and his precious wife, Betty Jean Paris Sloan in 2010; and a sister, Carol Harper.

Jack wanted to thank his very special friends, Louise Smith, Bill McGill, AD and Sharon Reid, Robert and Julie Saiz, and his wonderful caregiver, Brenda Calixto.
