Melvin Lee Hammon, 91, of Pampa, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026 in Pampa.
Services will be 10:00 AM August 29, 2026 at Hobart Baptist Church with Pastor Brian Mullins officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Melvin was born on June 1, 1935, in Healdton, Oklahoma, to John and Bonnie Hammon. He attended Monahans High School and was a member of the Class of 1954. During his high school years, Melvin was active in the band and played on the tennis team. Following high school, he moved to Hobbs, New Mexico.
On December 19, 1964, Melvin married Joyce Brister Anderson, and together they made their home in Pampa. Joyce passed away on March 12, 2026. Melvin worked for Cabot for 10 years. While working there, his strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to start Hammon’s Janitorial Services in 1969. He continued to own and operate the business for many years before selling it to his son, Roy, in 2015.
Melvin believed in serving his community and served as a Pampa city commissioner in 1981. He was strong-willed and independent, with a personality that was hard to forget. Melvin enjoyed dancing, roller skating, and going to the movie theater. He also had a playful side and was known to be quite the flirt. His outgoing personality and lively spirit for life were qualities that made Melvin uniquely himself.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathy Rodriguez; brother, Alvin Hammon; and son-in-law, Jimmie Mendez.
Survivors include his children, Roy Anderson and wife San of Pampa, John Hammon and wife Daniele of Kerrville, Donna Mendez of Lubbock, Lavon Bogle and husband Dewayne of Pampa, and Karen Hammon of Shawnee, Oklahoma; sister, Louise Hollady of Aroura, Colorado; 22 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren and one on the way; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
