Mona Smith

September 13, 1936 — May 7, 2025

Pampa

Our sweet Mona soared into Heaven at 88 years of age on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in Pampa. She is leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and her legendary Sweet Tea.

Celebration of life mass will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 15, 2025, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Guadalupe Mayorga, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mona was born on September 13, 1936, in Borger to Perry Samuel Coberly and Jewell Catherine (Bivins) Coberly. As a young girl, her family moved to Gray County, where she grew up and attended school at Holy Souls in Pampa and graduated from Lefors High School. She was one of nine siblings. Shortly after High School, she married Charlie Smith on December 13, 1955, in Clovis, New Mexico. Thereafter, they started their family and shared almost 65 years of marriage before Charlie passed in 2020.

Mona loved Jesus with all her heart and her faith was the steady rhythm behind everything she did. When confronted by the problems of the world, she was known to say “Well, lets see what Jesus has to say about it”, as she turned to pray.

She also knew how to live, really live! She played the piano like nobodies’ business, danced like no one was watching, and never turned down a good crossword puzzle that made her think (or cause the rest of us to feel a little inadequate).

Mona was a devout Catholic woman who attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and in her younger years, was employed there as a coach and secretary for the School. She also worked for Sammons Communications and J.C. Penney’s for many years.

Mona never missed a moment that mattered to the ones she loved. She was there, usually early and with snacks. She cheered the loudest, clapped the hardest and made every event feel a little more special just by showing up. She had a wonderful way of making everyone feel seen and loved.

Mona is survived by two sons, Rick Smith and wife Sally of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Mark Smith and wife Pamela of Pampa; a daughter, Kim Tindell and husband Charlie of Canton, Georgia; her granddaughters include, Rissa Black and husband Phil of Aurora, Colorado, Shannon Fristoe and husband Tyson of Pampa, and Chelsea Cloer and husband Bryn of Woodstock, Georgia; grandsons include, Derek Smith and girlfriend Lindsey Beaty of Edmond, Oklahoma, Taylor Tindell and wife Jasmine of Mableton, Georgia, Joshua Smith of Pampa, Kyle Smith and wife Analisa of San Diego, California, Ethan Tindell and wife DeAnna of Alpharetta, Georgia, Michael Cohee, and Robbie Cohee; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kellen, Kash, Vivienne Emilia, Eliza Violet, Tripp, Teel, Camden, Harper Jane, Monae Lucia, Poppie Joy, Shepherd, and Ames, Blythe Wynn; a sister, Judy Reece of Bentonville, Arkansas; two brothers, Jody Coberly and wife Terry of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Max Coberly and wife Francis of Bentonville, Arkansas; as well as other extended family.

Mona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Wayne Smith; two daughters, Letitia Ann and Sherry Cohee of Everett, Washington; brothers, Frances Earl Coberly, Billy Sam Coberly of Wheeler, TX, Leslie Burnis of Bentonville, Arkansas; three sisters, Bessie Frizzell of Long Beach, Mississippi, Artie Crabb of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Bertie Karr of Amarillo, Texas.

So, here’s to Mona- With a full glass of Tea, a crossword puzzle in hand and her hummingbird wings finally at rest. We know God is saying….
