Robert “Bob” Steger, 88, of Tulsa, Oklahoma and formerly of Pampa, Texas, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026 in Tulsa.
Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, June 11, 2026 at First Methodist Church of Pampa with Rev. Jarrod Neal, pastor, officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Bob was born April 22, 1938 in Cortland, New York to Reuben and Betty Steger. He graduated from high school in Tully, New York in 1956. Bob attended college at the University of Syracuse before entering into the United States Air Force in 1958. He was honorably discharged in 1962.
On June 3, 1961, he married the love of his life, Ruth Savchenko in Vega. After they were married, they transferred to Jacksonville, Florida for a year before moving to Pampa in 1962. Bob worked as a radiology technician for Highland General Hospital in Pampa for 13 years before he changed careers in 1974. He worked at Celanese Chemical Plant as a chemical operator and would spend 25 years at Celanese before retiring in 2000.
Following his retirement, he and Ruth took the opportunity to travel, exploring the United States in their RV, enjoying cruises, and creating cherished memories while wintering in Mesa, Arizona. In 2016, they returned to Pampa so Bob could take care of Ruth during her cancer treatments. He was a devoted caregiver and a loving husband. They decided in 2018 to move to Amarillo to be closer to the doctors, which lasted less than a year before returning to Pampa. Ruth passed away on September 24, 2019.
Bob was community minded as he was heavily involved in Boy Scouts. He served as Cub Master, Den Leader, and Assistant Scoutmaster, culminating in being awarded the coveted Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award as an adult. He was the reason Richard earned his Eagle Scout award.
Bob also spent time volunteering at First United Methodist Church working in the community garden and any other areas where he was needed. He also was a faithful volunteer at Meals on Wheels and Good Samaritan. Bob loved his community and loved giving back. He loved his church and his family dearly.
Bob was a loving father to his two sons and was a loyal friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Reid Steger.
Survivors include his son, Richard Steger and wife Heather of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Hayley Weaver and husband Chris of Pampa, Isley Steger and Mollie Steger both of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two great grandsons; Chris Steger of Pampa; sister, Donna Pittenger and husband Bill of Athens, Georgia; and brother-in-law, Paul Savchenko of Anacortes, Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
