Rusty was born on June 16, 1969 in Pampa to Gene and Marilyn Pool Ferguson. He attended B.M. Baker Elementary School before moving to Briscoe, where he graduated in 1988. Survivors include his father, Gene Ferguson and wife Vicki of Wheeler; brother, Ty Ferguson and wife Christi of Twitty; 2 sisters, Mandy Meadows and husband Mark of Briscoe and Stacey Booth and husband Steve of Fritch; 3 nieces, Tatum Meadows, MiKayleigh Ferguson, and Sidney Mills; 5 nephews, Landry Meadows, Barrett Meadows, Landon Ferguson, Quintin Mills, and Colton Saavedra; and numerous friends.
