Sonja Young

July 20, 1939 — August 5, 2023

Pampa

Sonja Young, 84, of Pampa, and formerly of Dumas, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023, in Pampa.

Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Fairview Cemetery with Sonja’s family and friends coming together to share memories. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Sonja was born on July 20, 1939, in Childress, to Tommy Maitland and Gertrude Viola (McMinn) Stall. She grew up in Wellington, where she was a basketball player at Wellington High School. Earlier in life, she worked the switch boards for the local phone company and was a cashier at the Thriftway grocery store. Sonja met Jesse Dale Young while in high school and always said that she fell in love with Jesse right off the bat. The two were married on November 23, 1957, in Twitty, Texas. Not too long after the wedding, they moved to Dumas, where they made their home and raised their two sons.

Sonja, or Meemaw to most, was an amazing artist. She loved painting an art project that Jesse, or Pawpa, had cut out of wood. She was in love with all things cats too. Sonja was happiest when she was around her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sonja was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Jesse Dale; her sister, Mary Ruth Stall; and her brother, Tommy Leon Stall.

She is survived by her sons, Terry Dale Young of Bryan, and Roger Dee Young and wife Jessica of Pampa; grandchildren, Joshua Dee Young and husband Trevor, Kristin Elaine Young, Cooper Maitland Young, Sonja Dawn Young and husband Travis, Remington Dale Young and wife Stephanie, and Sabre Lynn Young; great-grandchildren, Serenity Lynn Young, Mikeala Faith Lewallen, Troy Lee Edwards, Jr., Harrison Dale Young, Emilia Iris Young, Peyton Grace Francis, and Ayden Ryan Duffendack; and the best friend and neighbor, Gladys Goree.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Duree’s Divine Interventions Residential Home Care, at 528 Red Deer St., Pampa, TX, 79065.
