Sumi Hayes

November 10, 1929 — April 3, 2021

Sumi Hayes, 91, of Pampa passed away on April 3, 2021 in Canadian.

Services will be 10:00 AM Friday, April 9, 2021 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Rev. Byron Williamson, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. The service will be livestreamed through the funeral home website.

Sumi was born November 11, 1929 in Okinawa, Japan. She married Billy D. Hayes on February 13, 1962 in Okinawa, Japan. He passed away on March 4, 1995. Sumi and Billy moved to Pampa in 1969. She worked over 18 years at Coronado Hospital, in housekeeping, before retiring. After retiring, Sumi started volunteering at the hospital until 2012. She enjoyed visiting the patients and loved to sing to them in Japanese. Sumi had received her ten thousand volunteer hour award. She loved playing bingo, reading and listening to the Bible, and singing hymns. She was known as, Mammaw to her grandchildren, who grew up down the street from her house.

Sumi was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Chiyo Izumikawa.

Survivors include her 2 daughters, Tomoko (Tommie) Pope of Magnolia and Sadako Izumikawa of Okinawa, Japan; a brother, Kankichi Izmikawa of Okinawa, Japan; 6 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mesa View Senior Living Activity Fund, 106 Teas Circle, Canadian, Texas 79014.
