Vera Mae Hargus

November 20, 1929 — July 20, 2020

Vera Mae Hargus, 90, passed away on Monday, July 20 in Amarillo, Texas.

A private family graveside will be held at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Vera was born in Lela, Texas on November 20, 1929 to Henry (Guy) and Hattie Overton. She grew up on a farm near Shamrock, Texas and later moved with her family to Amarillo, Texas where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1947. Shortly afterward, she met and married Elza Hargus on December 20, 1947. They relocated and made their home in Pampa in 1948 and became members of Central Baptist Church and productive members of the community.

Vera was a very creative, self-reliant, practical person that could do almost anything (from painting details with a tiny brush to swinging a hammer).  She loved to play games! Whether it was playing board games with her two sons, playing 42 with friends or maybe a game of solitaire, she was always keeping her mind active. She was most recognized by the community as a reliable employee of The Hobby Shop, where she worked for 30 years and retired in 1990.

After losing her husband, she moved to the Continental Senior Living in Amarillo in 2014 where she found new friends and new games to play.  When they offered activities, she wasn’t really interested in, she always had her iPad games.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry (Guy) and Hattie Overton; husband, Elza Hargus; sisters, Geneva Lax, Hazel McClane and Imogene Swafford; and sisters-in-law, Freda Fisher and Leota Crocker.

Survivors include two sons, Larry and wife Shirley Hargus of Bartlett, Illinois and Mike and wife Debbie Hargus of Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Kathrine Lax of Clarksville, Arkansas; and sisters-in-law, Aileen Cook of Seymour, Missouri and Helen Haynes of Springfield, Missouri.

Memorials may be sent to a charity of our choosing.
