Woodrow "Woody" Wayne Wells passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at Fairview Cemetery with Chaplain Larry Virnau, officiating. Burial and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.
Woody will have his book available for signing from 3:00 - 8:00 PM, Monday at the funeral home.
Woody was born on June 5, 1939, in Portales, New Mexico, to Louis and Polly Wells. He was the youngest of six children and spent his childhood and formative years in Portales, graduating from Portales High School in 1958. Following graduation, he worked for a wholesale candy distributor.
On August 24, 1961, Woody married Terri Lee of McAlister, New Mexico. Their marriage was a loving partnership that spanned 65 years. Two weeks after their wedding, Woody was drafted into the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, he played professional baseball for the Army. After completing his military service, he attended Eastern New Mexico University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1967 as a member of the first class in the university's newly established Computer Science program. His accomplishments were a source of great pride to both his parents and professors.
In 1970, Woody and Terri moved to Pampa, Texas, where they made their home and built their life together. Woody enjoyed a successful career as a computer programmer and computer project manager, working for Cabot Corporation, IRI, National Oilwell, National Oilwell Varco, and Corporate Systems before retiring in 2002.
In May 1981, Woody and Terri welcomed their daughter, Mandy, who brought immense joy to their lives.
Woody enjoyed spending time with family, researching genealogy, collecting coins, and tinkering with mechanical projects, especially computers and automobiles. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee, looking out over the pasture behind his home. During Mandy's high school years, father and daughter shared a love of tennis and spent many weekends traveling together to tournaments.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by five siblings.
Woody is survived by his devoted wife, Terri Wells of Pampa; his daughter, Mandy, and her husband, Michael Rutland, of San Antonio; along with many friends and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
Woody will be remembered for his love of family, intrinsic knowledge of all things mechanical, strong work ethic, and the quiet kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him.
